Wall-E Questions and Answers:
1) -Prevailing Themes-
-Friendship/Companionship/Love/Affection
-Environment/Environmental Aspects

-The environment Theme in Wall-E:
This is a strong theme throughout the movie. It is the leading cause of the humans leaving Earth (their fault), and in turn, they come back when they realize it is safe. Wall-E outlives the other robots – or “Wall-E’ robots – and he is also quite human. The humans changed the environment, and they become more robotic to the extent that they barely know of their own existence in the beginning. The movie also has an in-depth message. It is: If humans do not stop polluting the Earth, we may not have one to live in in the future.
2) -Examples of the Theme + Exploring the Theme-
-The world is “destroyed” by humans
-There are only robots left on Earth (Wall-E’s)
-The humans must leave in order to survive – they have been on the ship for over 700 years
-“Operation Cleanup” has failed
-In the end, Earth is stable enough to support life. They make plants and stuff again and the Earth returns to it’s natural state with the human’s knowledge advanced.
3) -References to 20th – Early 21st Century-
-Examples-
-Wall-E’s gadgets and his collection of stuff in his house are mostly things (garbage) the humans don’t use anymore (seen as primitive objects)
-The whole environment aspect – people are worried today about the future of the planet and the future of it’s environment. Wall-E gives a sort of insight on the creator’s opinions on what it might be like.
-Why They Included Them-
-For Wall-E’s trinkets, I think the creators wanted to include the objects to make everything in our time seem unused or primitive; so that the whole movie seems more futuristic. I think they also wanted the audience to clue in at the beginning what time period it takes place in.
-For the environment aspect, I think the creators included it as a major plot subject. It creates a good story and also carries a message in it. It is good for the plot because the environment is a major part of the future.
4) -Character Design-
-Element used to convey emotion-
-This element is very important to the plot. The way the animators designed the characters is significant to how they convey emotion. They made them pretty cutesy and small – this is important because it depicts a sense of innocence in the characters. This is like in Grave of the Fireflies; they depict Setsuko as this cute, innocent child – and when she dies in the end, you feel like you miss the character more, as opposed to if she was an unappealing, rude child. This is also evident in the character Wall-E. Being the main character, he is immediately thought of as someone who needs to “stay” throughout the movie. For example, when Wall-E is injured, the emotion conveyed is that of a feeling of helplessness, like “oh, no! They can’t kill Wall-E, he’s so cute… and the main character…”.
5) -Repeated Motifs-
-Wall-E folding his hands together is seen often in the movie. It exhibits the personality and emotion that Wall-E feels throughout the movie – he just wants to be LOVED (which makes him even more likeable)! Then, when he finds his robot love, Eve, he displays a feeling of being loved, which satisfies the audience.
6) -Humans with robot characteristics, vise versa-
-What does it serve?-
-It serves by giving the robots human aspects. The humans just want to be lazy and do nothing, having everything done for them, while the robots take care of everything. They actually do things to help (like Wall-E), some being exceptionally smart and acting like the humans they replaced.
7) -Would you describe this as a good film?-
-Yes, I would. I think it was very well done, animation and plot-wise. When I first saw it in the theatres, I noticed the in-depth message about the environment and such. I kind of thought that the child audience would not notice something like that (with the “green movement” going on), so it was also good for adults to see it. The animation was really well done in my opinion. It must have taken years, with the setting and movement and stuff, it must’ve also been really complicated. I wouldn’t change anything.
