David's Package Design

Sara -Packaging

Ink
The design on the package will be printed in one colour with soy ink.

Soybean oil is made from a renewable resource (soybeans). Soy ink, unlike traditional petroleum-based ink, is low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which can negatively effect the environment and human health.

Material
The package will be made of unbleached boxboard made from recycled materials.

Paper is often bleached to achieve a bright white colour, however the bleaching process is harmful to the environment. Chlorine gas is a common chemical that is used to bleach paper and is very toxic. Using chlorine to bleach paper produces dioxins which are hazardous chemical compounds. Dioxins have been shown to be highly toxic to living things. They do not readily degrade and can stay in the environment as compounds for years. Dioxins build up in our fat cells and have been shown to increase the risk of cancer when exposed to it for long amounts of time. This is also true for animals other than humans as well.

Unbleached paper is chlorine free so it does not produce dioxins and other harmful chemicals.

Glue
The glue that holds the bottom of the box together will be non-toxic.

Product
The balloons themselves will be biodegradable.

Waterbottle replacement by Jeff Anderson

Water bottle Replacement

• Eco-friendly

• Harmful chemicals and toxins not used in the production

of the bottle

• Toxins don’t mix into the water

• Can be used more times than regular bottles

• Made from aluminum

The size of the bottle is bigger than the model scale and can hold more liquid than your average bottle. Also, the aluminum surface of the bottle keeps it protected from breaks, and cracks. Finally, the bottle is cheaper to make than plastic bottles, and can be reused for as long as you have the bottle!

"Stash of Pistach" by Yash. Has a shell dispenser

“Stash of Pistach”

Packaging
By
Yash Saxena
The product that I created and packaged is named “Stash of Pistach”. This product is a box that consists of 24 pistachios. The box also has a “shell dispenser” to throw the shells in. This makes the products easy to use on the move. The packaging is made of this glossy paper that is 100% compostable. The product, pistachios, has an edible inside which is know as the flesh. The shell is not edible but it can be composted. Therefore the whole product is compostable. The pistachios come off of the trees on the fields of Afghanistan. This product has a very colourful packaging that is red, green and badge, which are the colours of the pistachio. The ink on the product is also compostable. This is a very innovative idea that has is 100% compostable.

Arthur's Packaging

I came up with the idea for my package when I looked at the packaging for Chips Ahoy cookies. I always thought the plastic tray the cookies come in was really inefficient and wasteful. After looking around for a better way to package cookies, I decided that a Pringles container would work really well. The cylindrical shape of the container would be a good fit for circular cookies, and I had a good idea for a logo making fun of Pringles.

My mock up package is just a Pringles container with new labelling, but my actual product will have a number of things going for it that will make it very eco-friendly. First of all, the container itself will be made of recycled cardboard, which will reduce the amount of new paper products used to manufacture it. The printing on the can will be done in soy ink, which is much more environmentally friendly than printing with regular ink. Soybeans are a renewable energy source, and soy ink also has the benefits of vibrant colours and cost effectiveness. The plastic lid on top of the container will be made out of a bio-degradable plastic, specifically a starch based plastic called Plastarch Material (PSM) that is derived from corn starch. This plastic is made out of a number of biodegradable materials that decompose naturally, which is great for the environment. Finally, the metal bottom of the container will be made out of stainless steel. This may seem like a weird choice, but stainless steel is one of the most environmentally friendly metals out there. This type of steel is 100% recyclable, and it is also very hygienic, which makes it great for use in the food industry.

BOXIES

How Does it Work?

 Package is designed like a dispenser.

 Finished product includes metal tab (like on box of table salt) at front for access and closure at front. (Top may also be opened with tab)

 Designed to fit the same amount of smarties in a regular box of existing product.

Qualities

 Package is made of 100% recyclable materials (original packaging is already completely recyclable)

 Design is intended to be more attractive and interactive than original packaging.

 Patterned box and “cute” aesthetic is meant to be more appealing to consumers.

 “Boxies” is a play on the original product, “Smarties” based on the fact that the design is a cube.

 Packaging is deceptive and appears larger as a cube, but actually holds the same amount of “Smarties” as the original (due to ramp inside for proper dispension), therefore this is an effective marketing method.

 Cube is actually volumetrically (material wise) more efficient than a rectangular box. (Less waste)

 All previous nutritional and company contact information is also included in the new packaging design.

Note about Finished Product : Has polished/high quality altered logo, all information incorporated into original printed pattern, and a metal dispenser tab.

Andy Su Biopackage

Instant noodles are by far one of the most commonly found fast food available around the world. Each individual serving is packaged in its own plastic bag. Now, that is A LOT of plastic waste. By simply replacing the environmentally-damaging petroleum-based plastic with something “green”, the negatives effects doesn’t seem so bad now.

For my project, I used Polylatic Acid (PLA) plastics. It looks and feels no different from conventional plastic. Printing works the same way as regular plastic packaging. The only difference is that PLA plastic is biodegradable. PLA synthesis does cost more than fabricating petroleum-based plastic, but I believe that a little higher cost goes to long way to help our environment.

For assembly purposes, the black edges are glued together, and so are the white edges, respectively. This ensures a tight seal and efficient use of packaging material.

Extra note: The mock-up is in black and white due to not having a functioning colour printer. The background colour is green, the logo is light blue (text) and yellow (backcolour), the star is dark blue, and the texts are in black.
