Elements and Principles of Design Exercises (2 weeks)
Each assignment is worth 10 marks.
Carry out the following exercises in any order. Finish 2-3 exercises per day. 8”x8” 300dpi
If you are unfamiliar with the elements and principles, look up definitions on the internet prior to proceeding.
1.Line – use lines to convey the following: speed, frustration, calm, depth,
2.Shape – use 3 shapes (no more) to create a self portrait
3.Colour – use colour to create the following moods: happiness, depression, anger, lust. Create colour swatches that could be classified as: analogous, monotone, split complimentary. Label each.
4.Space – Arrange collage elements on a page to emphasise absent space.
5.Texture – create, photograph, illustrate, or collage 5 textures: smooth, rough, hairy, gravelly, wet.
6.Shade – Integrate 12 different shades of grey into a composition.
7.Volume – using your name as the basis, create either implied or actual volume.
8.Rhythm – Create a graphic representation of a song using only basic geometric shapes.
9.Pattern – create a repeated pattern that is arranged symmetrically, radially, or dynamically
10.Emphasis – arrange 4-5 objects on a page to emphasise one particular object.
11.Contrast – create two versions of an object: one that is camouflaged into it's surrounding, and one that jumps out
12.Balance – create a sense of balance using two differently sized objects
13.Movement – lead the viewer through your piece or create a composition that has a feeling of movement

Field Assignment - ASCII Art
Here is an example of ASCII art. ASCII or text art was primarily used from the 60's to the early 90's mainly because the printers back then didn't have good support for graphics and ASCII art helped save on ink. During the 90's, graphics and picture files seen today developed as well as better printing capabilities and ASCII art soon faded out of use.

-- TEXTURE --
Visual texture is the illusion of a 3-dimensional surface. A 2D surface can be made to "look" 3D simply by adding texture and depth to the picture. You may not be able to "feel" the texture but you can still "see" that it is there. In some cases, a viewer is almost tempted to reach out and touch the picture, thinking it will have a real texture. Texture is yet another clever way to deceive the eye into thinking and seeing something that really isn't true.

COLOUR
We are in a world where colour dominates our lives, from reading signs on the road to seeing if fruit is good to eat. It affects our moods like, blue is calming - red can make us tense. We use and experience colour everyday in our lives without even appreciating it.
The visible spectrum of colour consists of seven main colours shown below in the picture:

Higher frequency colours are - violet - indigo - blue
lower frequency colours are - yellow - orange - red.
