Value determines how light or dark any given image is. If the value is low, then the image will be darker; but if the value is high, then the image will be lighter. Artists and graphic designers often make objects of further distances have a higher value so the viewer will get the impression that it’s further away, while making closer objects having a more neutral value so the hue can standout and look closer than the rest. The screenshot below really makes good use of this effect as the closer objects have more colour and distant buildings are lighter which gives you a better idea of the 3D space in that picture. Certain environmental conditions can affect value: such as fog, smog, haze, and mist increasing value; and nightfall and smoke decreasing value.

I only liked the first R&C game on PS2, I tried the 2nd game but didn't like it as much, just to put that out there
