Arthur's Packaging

I came up with the idea for my package when I looked at the packaging for Chips Ahoy cookies. I always thought the plastic tray the cookies come in was really inefficient and wasteful. After looking around for a better way to package cookies, I decided that a Pringles container would work really well. The cylindrical shape of the container would be a good fit for circular cookies, and I had a good idea for a logo making fun of Pringles.

My mock up package is just a Pringles container with new labelling, but my actual product will have a number of things going for it that will make it very eco-friendly. First of all, the container itself will be made of recycled cardboard, which will reduce the amount of new paper products used to manufacture it. The printing on the can will be done in soy ink, which is much more environmentally friendly than printing with regular ink. Soybeans are a renewable energy source, and soy ink also has the benefits of vibrant colours and cost effectiveness. The plastic lid on top of the container will be made out of a bio-degradable plastic, specifically a starch based plastic called Plastarch Material (PSM) that is derived from corn starch. This plastic is made out of a number of biodegradable materials that decompose naturally, which is great for the environment. Finally, the metal bottom of the container will be made out of stainless steel. This may seem like a weird choice, but stainless steel is one of the most environmentally friendly metals out there. This type of steel is 100% recyclable, and it is also very hygienic, which makes it great for use in the food industry.
